The leader of the world ranking of the APR Carlos Alcaraz made a speech after winning the 2026 Australian Open trophy – the Spaniard defeated Novak Djokovic in the final:

“First of all, I just want to say about Novak. I think he certainly deserves a standing ovation. You say that I do some things, amazing things, but what you do is really inspiring. Not only players, tennis players, but athletes and generally all people around the world. Including for me. Just doing the right thing, working hard every day with the team, every tournament, and playing such a great game – I just love watching you play so much. It was an honor to share the locker room with you, share the court and, as I said, watch you play. So thank you so much for what you are doing because it is really empowering. It really inspires me.

My team is over there, in that corner. I don’t think anyone knows how hard I worked to win this trophy. I’ve just been chasing this moment since pre-season and it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster emotionally. We got through it trying not to hear what people were saying before coming to Australia and just doing the right thing. You pushed me to do the right thing every day. So I have to say that I am really grateful to everyone who is by my side now. And like I said, this trophy is always yours.

And I want to continue. It’s a bit strange for me, as Djokovic said, to see Rafa in the stands. I think it’s the first time, if I’m not mistaken, at the professional level, because I know you watched my matches when I was 14 or 15 years old. It’s been a long time. But it’s a great honor for me to play in front of you. We had some great battles on the court – not a lot, but still. It was an honor for me to share the court, train, play matches, and be together in the dressing room. And now seeing you watching my matches is a privilege. Thank you very much for being here.

And to everyone who made this tournament possible. I’ve said it many times: it’s a great tournament for players. Everything is improved here every year to make us feel comfortable. I really appreciate and am very grateful for everything you do for us. I am very happy to come here every year. It’s an honor to play here in Melbourne every year. And I think this privilege is because of the love I receive every time I come. This is incredible support and huge love – not only during matches, but also every time I go out on the court for training. I feel this love from people. So I just want to say thank you. Thank you so much for pushing me to the top.

For supporting me in difficult moments during matches. All I can say is a huge thank you and I can’t wait to go back next year. Thank you”.
