Antonio Vergara and Miguel Gutierrez scored their first Serie A goals to get Napoli back into the game against Fiorentina, but the match was overshadowed by a serious injury to Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who was carried off the field on a stretcher.

The Neapolitans come into the game on the back of back-to-back defeats against Juventus and Chelsea, with the latter ending in a Champions League exit in midweek. The injury crisis left no room for squad rotation, with Vanja Milinkovic-Savic preparing for the game only on the bench, while David Neres, Matteo Politano, Amir Rahmani, Andre Frank, Zambo Angissa, Kevin De Bruyne and Billy Gilmour remained sidelined.

Fiorentina have also been in a difficult run of form, losing their last two matches, 2-1 to Cagliari in Serie A and being knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Como. Tariq Lamptey remained the only absentee, while Moise Kean returned to the bench after picking up an ankle injury.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Vergara burst into the penalty area and beat David De Gea to score his first goal in Serie A. At the start of the second half, Miguel Gutierrez doubled Napoli’s advantage with a spectacular strike from outside the penalty area.

Fiorentina did not give up: Manor Solomon, ex-Shakhtar winger, scored his first goal for the club, reducing the deficit to 1:2.

Unfortunately, the match was overshadowed by an injury to Giovanni Di Lorenzo: during the attack, his left knee buckled, and the player was carried off the field on a stretcher. Matias Olivera took his place.

Napoli held on for the win to move up to third in Serie A with 46 points. Inter leads with 52 points, which has not yet played a match of the 23rd round. Fiorentina is in 18th place with 17 points, in the relegation zone.
