PS5’s DualSense Controller Could Get Rid of Physical Buttons / PS6’s DualSense ConceptThe network drew attention to one of Sony’s new patent applications, which shows the concept of a possible controller for PlayStation 6, which is radically different from all previous gamepads of the company. Details about the patent were shared by Insider Gaming.
According to the document, the device completely dispenses with traditional physical buttons, sticks and triggers – all control elements are implemented through touch surfaces that adapt to the grip of the player’s hand.
It is claimed that such a buttonless design can work on the principle of touch in mobile games, and the location of virtual buttons will dynamically change depending on the position of fingers and palms. The “anchors” mentioned in the patent will be used for movement recognition and more precise regulation.
The document also mentions support for gestures such as swipes and pinches – the same that is already partially implemented in the DualSense PS5 trackpad.
The reaction of gamers to such potential changes turned out to be quite restrained. Many noted that the lack of physical tactile feedback and familiar buttons can negatively affect control, despite the presence of tactile feedback. Experience shows that conventional sticks and buttons are still the best choice for most players.
It is possible that Sony will use the development of the patent to create a hybrid DualSense with an improved touch trackpad and additional classic controls, or will offer such an innovative gamepad as an additional option for people with special needs.
According to rumors, Sony will extend the life cycle of the PS5, and the release of the next generation will be delayed “more than expected”. If earlier forecasts pointed to the middle of the decade, now the launch of the PS6 is shifted to 2028-2029.
