VAKS chose a preventive measure against the ex-head of the State Border Service in the case of cigarette smuggling

The higher anti-corruption court ordered a preventive measure – a bail of 10 million for the inspector general of the State Border Service Lieutenant General Serhiy Deinek, who is suspected of involvement in cigarette smuggling.

Literally: “According to the petitions of the NABU detective, approved by the SAP prosecutor, the investigating judge of the State Criminal Investigation Department applied a preventive measure to the former and current top officials of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, who were exposed for systematically receiving illegal benefits for facilitating the unimpeded crossing of the state border.

Thus, the court partially granted the request and imposed a preventive measure in the form of bail in the amount of UAH 10 million against the former head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. To the head of the checkpoint department of the State Border Service – UAH 2 million bail”.

Details: According to the UP, the prosecutor asked for 16 million bail for Deinek.

Both suspects are also charged with relevant procedural duties, in particular:

– to appear before the investigator, the prosecutor and the court at the first request;

– not to leave the territory of Ukraine without the permission of the investigator, prosecutor or court;

– notify the investigator, the prosecutor and the court about the change of place of residence and work;

– refrain from communicating with the suspects in this criminal proceeding, witnesses and any other persons regarding the circumstances stated in the suspicion;

– keep your passport(s) for traveling abroad, other documents giving the right to leave Ukraine and enter Ukraine, in the custody of the relevant state authorities.

The term of office is until March 30, 2026.

• On January 22, UP sources reported that the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office are conducting searches of the ex-head of the State Border Service Serhiy Deinek.
• Later, the Anti-corruption authorities announced the disclosure of a scheme of systematic bribery of top officials of the State Border Service of Ukraine. As part of the pre-trial investigation, it was established that in 2023, with the assistance of State Border Service officials, a group of people organized the illegal transportation of cigarettes across the state border of Ukraine to the EU.
