VIDEO. Sobolenko was fined a point in the match with Elina for making abnormal sounds

The first racket of the world Arina Sobolenko was penalized one point at the start of the 2026 Australian Open 1/2 final match against Elina Svitolina.

During the first point of the fourth game of the first set on Elina’s serve, the referee – Swede Louise Azemar Engzell – stopped the game and awarded the point to Svitolina because Arina was disturbing the Ukrainian with her excessive shouts.

Sobolenko tried to protest against such a decision. The referee took a video replay of the moment and remained adamant.

At the press conference, Sobolenko commented on this moment:

– The moment when the hindrance was recorded [це перешкода розіграшу, яка заважає одному з гравців нормально зіграти м’яч]happened quite early. First of all, I would like to know how you took this decision at the time.

– Oh, this has never happened to me. The truth is, never. Especially with my exclamations – it’s generally strange. I don’t even know. I think it was completely inappropriate. And the way I breathe out – I don’t know how to explain it. The ball just hit deep into the court, the rebound was awkward, everything coincided with the timing, and I exhaled – it happened completely naturally. And then she recorded it, and I thought: what is wrong with you at all? I think it was the wrong call, but oh well. She, to put it mildly, really pissed me off. And it actually helped me and benefited my game. I became more aggressive. I wasn’t happy with that decision, but it helped me win that game. So if she wants to do it again, don’t be afraid, let her fix it. This will help me.

– I just wanted to ask this question. When something happens in a match that you think is unfair or unfair, does it help you play better?

– Well, I don’t know. I think it helped me today. I played better because I became more aggressive. But overall, if it’s out of my control – and it wasn’t in my control – I asked for a video replay, but she still left the same decision. I thought someone else would make the decision, but it was her. So I understood that she was not going to change her decision. And if something is out of my control, I don’t care. I think this is the right approach to such situations.
