The spokesman of the State Border Service of Ukraine, Andriy Demchenko, officially denied the information spread by a number of media and social networks regarding the alleged dismissal of the former head of the department, Serhii Deinek, due to the decision of the military medical commission.

In a comment to Radio Svoboda on January 28, 2026, a representative of the service emphasized that, as of today, there is no order to dismiss Deinek from the ranks of the Armed Forces. Earlier, there were reports on the network that on January 27, the general allegedly submitted a report and was declared unfit for service due to his health, but the DPSU called these statements untrue.

After the official dismissal from the post of head of the State Security Service on January 4, 2026, Serhiy Deineko was appointed as a freelance adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko. This position is unpaid and not full-time, which was confirmed by the spokeswoman of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Maryana Reva, noting that there is no information about his final dismissal from military service. At the same time, law enforcement circles continue to discuss the NABU and SAP investigation, within which Deinek was charged with systematically accepting bribes for facilitating the smuggling of tobacco products to the EU under the guise of diplomatic cargo.

According to the investigation, the former top official could cover the scheme of illegal crossing of the border with cars with fake license plates during 2023. A court hearing on the selection of a preventive measure for him is scheduled for February 2, 2026, where prosecutors plan to request bail in the amount of 22 million hryvnias. Despite the high-profile scandal, the department insists on compliance with the procedural norms of service and urges not to spread premature conclusions about personnel decisions before the appearance of official decrees.
