The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has already reacted to this.
In his post on the X network, Salvini said that Zelensky is allegedly going to lose the war, and he “will have to choose between defeat and defeat.”
“We heard from Zelensky, who after all the money, efforts and help received still has the audacity to complain. My friend, you are losing the war, you are losing people, authority and dignity: sign the peace agreement as soon as possible. You will have to choose between defeat and defeat,” the Italian official wrote.
In response, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhiy Tyhiy, reminded that in one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War – at Monte Cassino – 3,000 to 5,000 Ukrainians took part, who, according to him, “did not choose between defeat and defeat”, even though victory sometimes seemed far away.
“They fought side by side with other allies, because the freedom of Italy and the whole of Europe was at stake. No matter how difficult Ukraine’s struggle is today, it is just as important as it was 80 years ago,” – wrote the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He expressed his gratitude to Italy and the Italians, who, unlike Salvini, “understand that the fate of peace in Europe is decided on the battlefield in Ukraine.”
“If Mr. Deputy Prime Minister is concerned about the peace agreement, we advise him not to turn to the president of Ukraine – a country that defends itself against aggression – but to Putin, who unleashed this war,” Tykhi wrote.
Salvini’s other statements As UNIAN previously reported, in 2024 the Italian vice-prime minister called French President Emmanuel Macron “crazy” after he took the lead on the issue of the possible deployment of Western troops to Ukraine. “I tell him: Macron, you go and fight, but don’t anger the Italians who want to live in peace. Never a single Italian bullet or bomb will enter Russia, we don’t want the Third World War on our doorstep,” Salvini said.
A year later, he attacked Macron again over the idea of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. “If you want, go there. Put on a helmet, a jacket, take a rifle and go to Ukraine,” Salvini told reporters about the French president.
He also explained why he shook hands with Russian Ambassador Oleksiy Paramonov during one of the diplomatic events. He said that there were many diplomats from different countries at the event, and they all greeted each other, so he decided to say hello. “I greeted the Russian ambassador, but also the Spanish ambassador and many others… as it should be if you want to have good relations and if dialogue is important to you,” Salvini explained.
