Details: Barro’s statement was related to the words of the NATO Secretary General on Monday, January 26, in the European Parliament that the creation of a separate European army could weaken the security of Europe and play into the hands of Russia.

According to the Secretary General of the Alliance, the creation of a new European army will lead to the duplication of NATO’s functions and structures and will ultimately complicate defense readiness. However, Rutte emphasized, this decision should be made by Europeans.
The head of the French Foreign Ministry wrote in response that the United States is now the security pillar of the continent. Instead, the Europeans should take this responsibility, as the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has repeatedly stated.
“Europeans can and should take responsibility for their own security. Even the United States agrees. It is the European pillar of NATO,” Barro wrote.

- The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, in a speech at the economic forum in Davos, expressed the opinion that under the current circumstances, Europe needs to create a united armed forces in order not to place all hopes on guarantees within NATO.
- Zelenskyi also stated that the basis of the united forces of Europe could be the Ukrainian army, but in Ukraine, given the ongoing war, “there is no time for that.”
- However, the basis of such an army, according to him, should be the Ukrainian experience of waging war.
