34-year-old People’s Deputy Orest Salamakha, a representative of the “Servant of the People” party, died in a road accident in the village of Sokilnyky in the Lviv Region.
He was driving an ATV and, according to preliminary data, drove into the oncoming lane, where he collided with a shuttle bus. After the accident, he was hospitalized, but doctors could not save the deputy’s life, declaring him dead in the hospital.
Salamakha was elected to the Verkhovna Rada in 2019 and worked in the Budget Committee, where he dealt with issues of local budgets and budget development. He was also a member of several inter-parliamentary groups.
In 2019, Orest Salamakha was elected a People’s Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of the 9th convocation from the “Servant of the People” party for electoral district #121 in the Lviv region as a non-party candidate. After the election, he joined the parliamentary faction of the same name.
In the Verkhovna Rada, Salamakha worked in the Budget Committee and held the position of chairman of the subcommittee on local budgets and budget support for regional development. He was also a member of the Ukrainian part of the Parliamentary Assembly of Ukraine and the Republic of Poland and was a member of several groups of inter-parliamentary relations, in particular with Poland, the USA, Great Britain, Belgium, Slovenia, Estonia, China and Singapore.
During the 2019 presidential elections, Salamakha was a proxy for candidate Volodymyr Zelenskyi in the Lviv region. In 2020, he joined the council of the Lviv regional organization of the Servant of the People party. In the same year, he opposed the creation of an advisory council in the Trilateral Contact Group with the participation of ORDLO representatives, despite the faction’s position.
At the end of 2022, Salamakha supported the urban planning reform (#5655), which was criticized by public organizations for lobbying the interests of developers and reducing the influence of communities on reconstruction processes. Due to public outcry, the bill remained unsigned by the president as of early 2024
In 2024, according to the analysis of the CHESNO movement, Salamakha was included in the list of people’s deputies who, having significant wealth in their declarations, received almost maximum compensation from the state for housing rent.
In addition, in 2020, the Drohobytsk City Council appealed to the Verkhovna Rada with a demand to recall Salamakh due, in the opinion of local deputies, to his inactivity in the district and ignoring invitations to city council sessions. Orest Salamakh was married and raised three children.
Also, in 2024, the NAZK found inaccurate information in Orest Salamakha’s declaration amounting to about UAH 9 million. A significant part of the property was registered to the wife of the people’s deputy, who owned a house in Sokilnyky, several non-residential premises, an apartment in Lviv and land plots in Lviv Oblast. A BMW X5 car and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle were also listed in the declaration.
