Former mentor national team of Spain Robert Moreno fired due to over reliance on ChatGPT for decision making.

The 48-year-old left FC Sochi last September after scoring just one point in seven games in the Russian Premier League. According to the club’s former sports director Andrii Orlov, Moreno actively used ChatGPT, sometimes making quite controversial decisions.

During the away trip to Khabarovsk, the coach fully followed the recommendations of artificial intelligence: he scheduled training for 7:00 in the morning two days before the match and demanded that the players stay awake for 28 hours. Football players did not understand such a schedule, and Moreno did not even consult with the player who previously played for SKA (Khabarovsk).

In addition, ChatGPT was also used during the selection of the attacker. According to data from Wyscout uploaded to the system, AI advised to sign Artur Shushenachev. However, the forward did not score a single goal in 10 matches.

“As an additional tool – why not. But for Moreno, GPT eventually became one of the main ones,” Orlov noted. As a result, the players and the coaching staff lost confidence in the coach, and Sochi was relegated from the RPL. Fans also criticized Moreno for sterile control of the ball and ignoring standards in training.

Moreno was previously in charge of the Spanish national team, but stepped down ahead of Euro 2020 and was replaced by Luis Enrique, who publicly criticized his approach.
