The detention was carried out in the Alboran Sea – the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, adjacent to the Strait of Gibraltar in the east – on the basis of Art. 110 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The operation was aimed at checking the identity of the vessel, as it was suspected of using a false flag.
A check of the documents on board confirmed the suspicions of the French authorities, which was reported to the prosecutor in Marseille.
“In accordance with international law and at the request of the prosecutor of the Republic, on January 22, the ship was removed from the route and escorted by the forces of the national fleet to the parking area for the purpose of continuing inspections,” the communiqué reads.
Sources told France’s BFMTV that the vessel was flying the Comoros flag. Under it, it also appears on maritime traffic tracking sites. The tanker often carried oil to ports in China and India.
BFMTV notes that the Grinch is mentioned under this name in the British list of tankers of the “shadow fleet” of the FR, and in the European and American – as Carl.
Earlier it became known that Britain was also involved in the detention of the tanker.
