Details: A NATO representative told CNN that one of the proposals discussed at Wednesday’s meetings between Alliance representatives, including Secretary General Mark Rutte, was the possibility of Denmark allowing the US to build additional military bases in Greenland, which would be built on what is considered US sovereign territory.

It was not clear whether the proposal would eventually become part of the deal, which US President Donald Trump hinted at on Wednesday when he backed off his threats about tariffs after meeting with Rutte, but an overall increase in the US military presence in Greenland was the main topic of discussion, the official said.
The New York Times reports that the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive diplomatic issue, said Rutte had suggested the idea. Two of the officials who attended the meeting compared it to Britain’s bases in Cyprus, which is considered British territory.
Officials did not know if the idea was part of the plan announced by Trump. Asked to comment on the agreement and its content, NATO said that “negotiations between Denmark, Greenland and the US will continue to ensure that Russia and China never gain an economic or military foothold in Greenland.”
