The detention of yet another tanker operating in violation of President Trump’s quarantine of vessels under sanctions in the Caribbean demonstrates our determination to ensure that only oil that is transported properly and in accordance with the law is exported from Venezuela.”
Details: On the War&Sanctions website, the Sagitta tanker was called one of those transporting Russian oil to circumvent sanctions imposed by a number of countries. In particular, Ukraine, Great Britain, USA, Canada, EU, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.
Prehistory:
- On January 7, the American military took control of two tankers, including the Russian-flagged vessel Bella 1which they pursued for more than two weeks. The vessels are accused of violating the sanctions policy.
- January 9, USA seized the Olina tanker in the Caribbean Sea, which, according to the public shipping database Equasis, was flying the flag of Timor-Leste, having previously sailed from Venezuela and returned to the region.
