Threads has become more popular than X in the mobile app, while X continues to hold the lead in microblogging in browsers, according to a report from Similarweb. UNNciting Gizmodo.
Details Last year, according to a report by analytics firm Similarweb, Threads briefly surpassed X in terms of daily active users on the mobile app. The two platforms subsequently more or less leveled out on this metric for a period before Threads recorded a higher number of daily active users in October, again according to Similarweb. According to Similarweb’s latest report, Threads continues to be significantly ahead of its competitors in terms of daily active users on iOS and Android.
About two weeks ago, Threads reached 141.5 million daily active users, while the X apps for Android and iOS have just 125 million.
X continues to outpace other platforms for those using the web version, which is an important indicator and shows widespread adoption. According to Forbes, X.com had 140.7 million daily active users last September, while Threads had just 7.7 million.
“It’s worth noting that unlike X – and, by the way, another X clone, Bluesky – Threads is a division of a more popular social media application than either of them: Instagram. Meta redirects Instagram users to Threads and vice versa, which undoubtedly greatly increases the influence of both platforms. And this is not taking into account the fact that both platforms operate under the auspices of Facebook,” the publication writes.
And, as the publication points out, while the rise of Threads above X reflects a long-term growth trend and not a short-term jump, it is also worth noting that this change comes against the background of a rather unpleasant scandal in which a chatbot managed by the parent company of X recently “bullied” the platform by creating deepfake photos of people in swimsuits without the permission of users.
According to a report by Appfigures cited by TechCrunch, Bluesky also experienced a surge in downloads during the height of the scandal, at one point seeing a 50% increase in daily downloads compared to the competitor’s pre-deepfake crisis.
