He called the situation around Greenland the most difficult moment of his presidential term.
“It is difficult for the Finns because it concerns such a close ally as Denmark. And such fundamental topics as territorial integrity, sovereignty and self-determination,” he said.
Regarding Trump’s tariff threats, the Finnish president believes that the EU should remain steadfast in its position. According to Stubb, the bloc has several tools that could lead to the elimination of U.S. tariffs. He did not specify what exactly it was about.
What happened before:
- On January 17, Trump announced the introduction of tariffs against a number of countries that do not agree with his claims to Greenland.
- He also stated that Denmark could not do anything about the Russian threat in Greenland for 20 years.
- In response, the EU is considering introducing tariffs against American goods. The options are planned to be discussed at an emergency summit in Brussels on Thursday, January 21.
- The finance ministers of France and Germany said that the Europeans will not tolerate Trump’s blackmail and will introduce appropriate measures.
