Due to the abnormally low air temperature in Odesa, 23 schools temporarily switched to remote learning mode to protect children from hypothermia.
Serhiy Lysak, the head of the Odesa City Military Administration, announced on January 19, 2026 in Telegram that the decision to change the format of classes was made by the heads of those educational institutions where it is impossible to maintain the proper temperature regime in the premises.
In addition to the schools that have chosen the full online format, another 28 secondary education institutions have switched to a mixed form of work, which allows to minimize the stay of students in cold classrooms. At the same time, 69 schools of the city continue to work in regular school hours, ensuring a stable educational process thanks to autonomous heating and proper thermal insulation of buildings.
Serhiy Lysak, who headed the Odesa MBA in October 2025, emphasized that the main priority remains the health of students and the creation of safe conditions for their development even in peak periods of cold weather. The Odesa authorities keep the situation under control and are ready to promptly change training schedules depending on forecasters’ forecasts for the coming days. It is expected that most schools will return to their usual format as soon as the frost is predicted to ease at the end of the week, when indoor temperatures will again meet sanitary standards.
Due to the critical situation in the energy sector, the winter vacation in the capital’s schools was extended until February 1, 2026.
Kyiv City Administration and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine react to the difficult situation in education caused by the consequences of missile attacks on the energy infrastructure.
