The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrsky outlined the strategic vision of the military campaign for the current year. The general’s key thesis was the assertion that an exclusively defensive strategy will not allow Ukraine to achieve victory, therefore the Defense Forces will combine strategic defense with active offensive operations.

This was discussed in his interview for LB.ua.

According to Syrskyi, this approach is critically important for maintaining the operational initiative, as it forces the Russian command to constantly maneuver reserves, withdrawing prepared units, equipment and ammunition from priority areas for them to deter Ukrainian counterattacks.

Analyzing the enemy’s plans, the Commander-in-Chief noted that the Russian Federation’s global goals for 2026 remain unchanged — the complete occupation of Ukraine and the destruction of its statehood. Russia continues to stick to its plans, adjusting only the timing and amount of resources involved, including planning to call up about 409,000 people during the year. Syrsky emphasized that the aggressor is counting on its mobilization potential of 20 million people and increasing the production of drones to 1,000 units per day, which makes 2026 an extremely difficult period of confrontation of an exhausting nature.

In order to achieve a turning point in the war, Oleksandr Syrsky defined several fundamental conditions: technological superiority through robotics and artificial intelligence, success in competing economies, stable support from Western partners, and the development of one’s own powerful weapons production. He emphasized that the transition to another level of technological equipment, in particular the active involvement of drone systems instead of people directly in the fire zone, is a priority of the Armed Forces. The Holovkom also recalled the successful experience of 2025, when active actions in the Kursk and Belgorod regions thwarted the large-scale plans of the Russian offensive on Sumy Oblast, attracting about 70,000 of the best Russian paratroopers and marines.

Syrskyi also explained why the Russian Federation could not increase the number of troops at the front.

According to official data of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, during the day of January 17, the Ukrainian military destroyed and wounded about 830 Russian invaders.
