The head of the European Council emphasized that Brussels is ready to defend itself against any form of coercion. The EU jointly assesses the tariffs announced by Trump as those that will undermine transatlantic relations and are incompatible with current trade agreements.
In addition, the President of the European Council declared the readiness of the European Union “to defend itself against any form of coercion”, while continuing “constructive interaction with the USA on all issues of common interest”.
The decision on the summit was a reaction to Donald Trump’s January 17 statement. The US president announced that starting February 1, he will introduce a 10 percent tariff on all goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland. From June 1, the rate will increase to 25%.
Washington has made it clear that it will use the tariffs as a means of pressure on countries that oppose its territorial claims, and will apply until an agreement is reached on the “full and absolute purchase of Greenland”.
Direct speech Koshty: “Given the importance of recent events and for the purpose of further coordination, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days.”
