In the national park “Tuzlivski lymani” they recorded a rare predator – a forest cat, which is listed in the Red Book. This species is very cautious and tries to avoid contact with people. Scientists managed to catch the shot.
This was reported by the doctor of biological sciences, an employee of the national park Ivan Rusev.
Rusev said that the team of scientists moved along the route after receiving a report about the possible flight of “Shakheds” and was looking for a safe place. Near the protected area, they noticed how a forest cat suddenly jumped out of the thickets and quickly jumped into the nearby rape field. It was there that I managed to quickly photograph the animal. After that, the predator disappeared again in the dense vegetation, skillfully disguising itself.
Forest cat (Felis silvestris) is a unique representative of wild fauna, which is the ancestor of domestic cats. However, their character and way of life are different. It has massive paws, a shorter tail with a black tip and distinctive rings. In the park, it is recorded in various areas and biotopes. It is a secretive species that avoids people and leads a solitary lifestyle.
Its diet consists of rodents: voles, mice, rats (the basis of the diet) and birds. Cats live alone, each has its own territory, which it marks with smells. It is most active at dawn and before sunset, although it can also hunt in deep forests during the day. Due to its striped gray-brown color, it is practically invisible in various biotopes and it is a real master of camouflage.
In Ukraine, the forest cat is listed in the Red Book with the status of “vulnerable”.
Among the main threats:
- hybridization with stray domestic cats,
- deforestation,
- destruction of hollow trees,
- and poaching and accidental trapping.
62% of Ukrainians are not familiar with the concept of “5 animal freedoms”: how it affects pets.
Scientists photographed the cubs of a very rare animal.
We will remind, at the front noticed rare animals that have not been seen in Ukraine for decades. Also scientists opened a new species of giant rhinoceros that was taller than a giraffe. The animal lived approximately 26.5 million years ago.
