Six defendants were charged with participating in a terrorist group, attempting to commit a terrorist act, and financing terrorist activities.
“The accused have different citizenships: one Spanish citizen, one citizen with dual Spanish-Colombian citizenship, as well as citizens of Colombia, Cuba, Russia and Belarus,” Urbelis said.
Prosecutors said the target of the planned attack was the infrastructure and products of UAB TVC Solutions in Šiauliai, including mobile stations for analyzing the radio frequency spectrum intended for the armed forces of Ukraine.
Four other suspects are under investigation. One of them was arrested in Colombia on the basis of an international warrant, and the procedure for his extradition to Lithuania is currently underway, and international warrants have been issued for the other three.
Prosecutors said the group’s activities were likely coordinated from Russia.
“The data of Lithuania’s preliminary investigation give reason to suspect that the attempted sabotage in Šiauliai was carried out on the orders and for the benefit of the Russian GRU,” the prosecutor’s office said.
The most serious charge is participation in an organized terrorist group, which is punishable by imprisonment for a period of five to 15 years according to the Criminal Code of Lithuania.
Urbelis noted that the indictment has 258 pages, and the case contains 42 volumes of materials.
In November 2022, two Spanish nationals were arrested in connection with planning an attack in Siauliai. The media reported that they were probably recruited by Russian intelligence.
After the failed attack, the suspects fled to Riga, where they were detained by Latvian special services and handed over to Lithuania on the basis of European arrest warrants.
We will remind:
- Earlier it became known that the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office charged Ukrainians Danylo B. and Vladyslav T. with an attempt to send parcels with explosives on behalf of the Russian special services.
- Recently in Latvia the suspect was detained in espionage for Russia, collecting information for Russian military intelligence.
