This statement caused the anger of US President Donald Trump.
“If we had to choose between the US and Denmark right now, we would choose Denmark, NATO and the EU,” Nielsen was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
He added that “the goal and desire of the island is a peaceful dialogue with an emphasis on cooperation.” According to him, Trump’s desire to seize the island is also a matter of “international law and our right to our own country.”
At the same time, the US president reacted sharply to this statement, attacking Nielsen with threats.
Asked by reporters to comment on claims that Greenland wants to remain in the union with Denmark, Trump asked: “Who said that?”.
After hearing that this statement was made by the Prime Minister of Greenland, Trump said that he “doesn’t know who he is.”
“Well, this is their problem. I don’t agree with him. I don’t know anything about him, but it will be a big problem for him,” the head of the White House said.
Trump and GreenlandEarlier, a bill on the “annexation” of Greenland was submitted to the Congress. Its purpose is to authorize Donald Trump to “take the necessary steps” to acquire Greenland and establish the process of its accession to the United States.
In turn, Trump said that in this matter he would like to go the diplomatic route and conclude an agreement, “but one way or another, we will have Greenland.” He also stated that this is a purchase, not a lease, and not a short-term ownership of this land.
