Manchester United have officially announced the appointment of Michael Carrick as head coach of the men’s first team following the controversial sacking of Ruben Amorim.

The contract with the 44-year-old specialist runs until the end of the 2025/26 season. Carrick is familiar with the club, having made 464 appearances for Manchester United as a player and won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Club World Cup.

After his playing career ended in 2018, Carrick joined the first-team coaching staff, working with Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and after the Norwegian’s departure, took over as interim manager of Manchester United in 2021. The Englishman’s last place of work was Middlesbrough, which he coached for two and a half years.

Carrick will be assisted by Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans and Craig Mawson. The club also thanked interim manager Darren Fletcher for his work last week – he will continue to work with the U-18 team.
