According to her, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the country to “survive” on its own.

Moldova, with a population of about 2.4 million people, sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, has become the target of Russia’s hybrid war, which includes disinformation and election manipulation, writes Politico. “If we have a referendum, I will vote for unification with Romania,” said Sandu, who heads the pro-European government in Chisinau, in an interview with the British podcast The Rest is Politics.

She explained her decision by offering to see what is happening today around Moldova and in the world. “It is becoming more and more difficult for a small country like Moldova to survive as a democracy, as a sovereign state and, of course, to oppose Russia,” Sandu stressed.

Romania and Moldova – unification and separationMoldova was part of Romania from 1918 to 1940, when it was annexed by the USSR, and declared independence again in 1991 after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

According to media reports, in the referendum in 2024, which was overshadowed by Russian interference, a small majority of Moldovans – 50.4% – voted for EU membership. At the same time, Sandu was re-elected to the post of president, winning about 55% of the vote and defeating a pro-Russian opponent.

Despite her personal support for this idea, Sandu admitted that unification with Romania does not enjoy the support of the majority of Moldovan citizens, unlike joining the EU. The country applied for membership in the European Union in 2022, and the president called this goal “more realistic.”

Polls show that about two-thirds of Moldovans oppose reunification, while support for this idea is traditionally higher in Romania.

Other news about Moldova and RomaniaEarlier, UNIAN reported that Moldova, together with the EU and the USA, is developing a plan for the reintegration of Transnistria. Some of the issues “remain sensitive” and require caution, and some processes “take time.”

Romania, in turn, despite the situation in the region, does not plan to send troops to Ukraine. But the country is still ready to make its contribution. “All participants strongly support the US-led efforts,” the country’s president said.
