For reference: Reza Pahlavi is the eldest son of the last shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The 65-year-old politician in exile lives in the USA, where he left shortly before the fall of the monarchy. He is a military pilot by education, trained in the US Air Force.
Pahlavi positions himself as a supporter of secular democracy. He does not demand the automatic restoration of the monarchy, but instead advocates a free referendum where Iranians will choose their form of government.
In recent years, his popularity in Iran has increased against the background of economic crisis and repression. At anti-government rallies, slogans in support of the Pahlavi dynasty, which a section of the population associates with times of stability and development before the arrival of the Islamists, are often heard.
