The demographic pyramid of Ukraine for the year 2023 is one of the most depressed in the world, and it does not yet take into account the full demographic damage from the hostilities. According to UN forecasts, by the end of the century, the country’s population may decrease to 15 million people from 52 million in 1992, but this forecast predicted the end of the war as early as 2023.

The peak of demographic growth in Ukraine occurred in the 1980s, when the country experienced a baby boom and the Russian language remained dominant. The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 became a real demographic catastrophe for Ukraine, which, in terms of its consequences for the population and statehood, exceeded even the famine and the Second World War. In the early 2000s, there was a short-term improvement in the birth rate, but this quickly changed due to political crises such as the Orange Revolution, the Maidan, and the loss of control over Crimea and other territories.

This demographic trend causes concern about the future of the country, because the decrease in population threatens not only the socio-economic stability, but also the security of Ukraine. The projected further reduction of the population requires the authorities to develop and implement an effective strategy for restoring the demographic potential.
