Xiaomi 17 Air was supposed to be Xiaomi’s answer to the iPhone 17 Air / Screenshot from the videoA video of the ultra-thin Xiaomi 17 Air phone, which was supposed to be the Chinese company’s answer to the trend of ultra-thin devices (such as the iPhone Air or Galaxy S25 Edge), got into the network. The video shows a prototype of the now canceled smartphone.
Insider Ice Universe revealed that the Xiaomi 17 Air has a body thickness of 5.5 mm (0.1 mm thinner than the iPhone Air), while the device has two cameras instead of one, which would make it stand out from Apple. The diagonal of the screen was to be 6.59 inches.
It was assumed that the Xiaomi 17 Air will be equipped with a silicon-carbon battery, like other Chinese flagships, with an emphasis on higher autonomy. However, the project never reached the stage of mass production, and the manufacturer himself decided to focus on other areas of development of his flagship line.
Sources note that the failure of the iPhone Air forced most brands to abandon the release of their ultra-thin models. The main difficulty for Chinese manufacturers is designing smartphones thinner than 6 millimeters. Such dimensions limit the layout of internal elements, which inevitably affects both the cameras and the battery.
We will remind you that achieving a 5.6 mm body in the iPhone Air required a number of compromises. The device received a battery of smaller capacity and only one main camera, but it was only $100 cheaper than the 17 Pro.
Earlier, there was information that Apple is still going to release the iPhone Air 2, despite the poor sales of the first smartphone. In turn, Samsung canceled the release of the thin Galaxy S26 Edge, choosing in favor of the S26 Plus.
