Gili wants to put Putin on trial / UNIAN collage, footage from the videoRussian dictator Vladimir Putin deserves to be kidnapped and brought to justice, as his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro recently did. This opinion was expressed by the Minister of Defense of Great Britain, John Geely, in a comment to Kyiv Independent journalist Chris York.
On Friday, Gili paid a visit to Kyiv. A few hours earlier, Russia launched one of the largest airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital during the entire war.
Speaking to a journalist against the backdrop of a high-rise building hit by a Russian drone, the British defense minister answered a question about which of the world leaders he would kidnap if he had the chance.
“I would take Putin into custody, I would bring him to justice for these war crimes, for what I saw in Bucha during one of my first visits to Ukraine, and for the abduction of some Ukrainian children I met in Irpin,” Gili said.
The journalist was even surprised by such frankness: “To be honest, I thought you would avoid this question,” he said.
Abduction of Maduro: the latest newsAs UNIAN wrote, in December the Vatican tried to convince the US to give Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro the opportunity to flee to Russia, believing that the Kremlin is ready to “exchange” Venezuela for Western concessions regarding Ukraine. However, the plan failed due to the reluctance of Maduro himself to go to the agreement: he did not believe in the reality of the US threats and defiantly ignored them.
Now, Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, are being held in different sections of a maximum-security prison in Brooklyn designed for particularly dangerous defendants. Maduro is on one of the upper floors with other high-ranking prisoners, but not in solitary confinement, presumably for his safety.
