“Leadership requires difficult decisions and the ability to recognize when institutions designed to promote peace, prosperity and freedom become an obstacle to achieving those goals. What we call the ‘international system’ is now crowded with hundreds of opaque international organizations, many of which have duplicative mandates, duplication of effort, inefficient performance and poor financial and ethical management,” he said.
According to him, even those organizations that “once performed useful functions” are increasingly turning into “inefficient bureaucratic structures, platforms for politicized activism, or tools that are contrary to the best interests of our country.”
“These institutions not only do not produce results, but also hinder the actions of those who want to solve these problems. The era of writing blank checks to international bureaucratic structures is over,” the state secretary emphasized.
He added that the 66 organizations from which the US decided to withdraw were found to be “ineffective, unnecessary and harmful” during an analysis conducted by the administration of Donald Trump.
“Our continued participation in organizations that do not reflect our values and do not serve our interests will be a betrayal of our national duty,” Rubio is convinced.
At the same time, he assured that this decision does not mean that “America is turning its back on the world.”
“We simply reject the outdated model of multilateralism, which treats American taxpayers as the world’s guarantors of the sprawling architecture of global governance,” Rubio said.
He added that the Trump administration demands real results from institutions funded by the US and in which the country participates. Rubio assured that the US is “ready to lead the campaign for reforms”.
What preceded: Earlier this week, Trump signed a memorandum to withdraw the United States from 66 international organizations.
According to Trump’s executive order, the US will end its participation in and funding of 31 UN structures and 35 non-UN organizations.
The list of UN structures includes the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Peacebuilding Fund.
The decree also provides for the withdrawal of the United States from the European Center for Countering Hybrid Threats, the International Institute of Justice and the Rule of Law, the Venice Commission, the Commission on Environmental Cooperation, the International Renewable Energy Agency, etc.
The list also mentions the Scientific and Technical Center in Ukraine.
