The minister expressed regret that after “decades of strong alliance” between Washington and Brussels, based on common values and benefits for both sides, the government of Donald Trump has appeared in the US, which has “different views”.
Given this position, he insists that Europeans should not “put up”.
At the same time, he does not believe that Trump’s threats will lead to the disintegration of NATO.
“I don’t even consider it as a hypothesis,” Albarez said.
What preceded: Recently, the head of the European People’s Party, Manfred Weber, called for the creation of a “European NATO” because, according to him, the United States can no longer be unconditionally relied on.
In response to these statements, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that, despite the current course of the administration of US President Donald Trump, the EU should not completely abandon cooperation with the US in defense matters.
