“We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders,” the party leaders said in a joint statement released Friday.

The announcement comes as Trump has become increasingly outspoken about his desire to seize Greenland – and this intention has become even more real after the US operation in Venezuela.

Greenlandic politicians demanded from the US president to stop his “disdainful attitude towards the country”.

“The future of Greenland must be decided by the Greenlandic people,” they said.

Greenland is part of the Danish kingdom, but has wide autonomy. Only about 57,000 people live on the island. It has extremely important strategic importance due to its location, size and reserves of natural resources.

At the same time, according to officials and experts, taking Greenland would be a relatively simple matter, although Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that it would mean the end of NATO.

US claims on GreenlandTrump previously said that the US “is going to do something with Greenland whether they like it or not”, because if the US does not get Greenland, it will be taken over by China or Russia.

“I would like to make a deal the easy way. If we don’t do it the easy way, we will do it the hard way,” he threatened.

Trump also said that the United States may be faced with the need to choose between the implementation of plans for Greenland and the preservation of NATO.
