Ukraine has determined the winner of the tender for the development of the Dobra strategic lithium deposit in the Kirovohrad region.

This is reported by The New York Times.

Mining rights will be awarded to a consortium that includes American billionaire Ronald Lauder, a long-time friend and ally of US President Donald Trump, Glaucom reports.

In addition to Lauder, the energy company TechMet, a share in which belongs to the American government corporation DFC, is a member of the consortium, which emphasizes the direct interest of the United States in the Ukrainian project.

The government commission of Ukraine emphasized that the competition was transparent and impartial. According to officials, the consortium scored the highest number of points, met all key criteria and offered an investment well above the minimum $179 million.

The “Dobra” field (Stankuvate and Nadiya sites) is one of the largest in Europe. Its reserves are estimated at 80-105 million tons of ore, which is critical for the production of batteries for electric cars in the world.

“Ronald Lauder is the heir to the Estée Lauder cosmetics empire and an influential sponsor of the Republican Party. It is known that he has known Trump since his university years, and it was he who presented the president with the idea of acquiring Greenland,” the publication notes.

Prior to that, the State Geological Survey of Ukraine sold the rights to develop the Lyubinetsk oil and gas field for over UAH 110 million. The money will replenish the state budget and the American-Ukrainian Reconstruction Investment Fund.
