Wrexham had a strong first half and went into the break with a comfortable lead. Goals were scored by Liberato Cacache and Oliver Rathbone, taking advantage of the mistakes of the visitors’ defense.
Nottingham Forest added a lot after the break and managed to get back into the game, with Igor Jesus reducing the deficit, but Dominic Haim extending Wrexham’s lead again.
The end of regular time turned into a real thriller. Callum Hudson-Odoi scored a brace to equalize in the 89th minute and send the match into overtime. In extra time, the teams could not decide the winner, so the fate of the ticket to the next round was decided in a penalty shootout.
The hero of the penalty shootout was Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who parried a decisive shot by Omari Hutchinson, and before that, Ihor Jesus.
Ukrainian Oleksandr Zinchenko started the match in Nottingham Forest’s starting line-up and was replaced after the break. For a team from the Premier League, relegation became one of the loudest surprises of this stage of the FA Cup.
