The Ukrainian boxer-champion took Polish citizenship for high-profile fights

WBC International middleweight champion Fedir Cherkashin admitted why he decided to apply for Polish citizenship.

“You know, there was such an opportunity, because I have Polish roots. But to box on Polish television in the main fights, you had to have citizenship. That is, I could not reach a higher level than the one at which I was boxing then.

I performed in main events, which is, for example, when you box before the main event of the evening. And I understood that something had to be done.

I have seen my life in Poland since 2017, when I moved. I realized that I am building my life around sports. Warsaw became the place where I wanted to live and work as an athlete.

In 2020, my career really started to gain momentum, and I was told that I needed to go to the main fights. And the main battles of television, again, give only when you have citizenship.

Therefore, I exchanged the Pole’s Card for Polish citizenship. I didn’t renounce Ukrainian citizenship – I just applied for Polish citizenship.

And already in 2020, I was given the opportunity to hold the main battle in Warsaw. It also made it possible to attract sponsors to my team, new people joined. As a result, it gave me a certain recognition – I became known in Poland not only in the boxing environment,” Cherkasyn said.
