In Chernivtsi, the utility company “Chernivtsivodokanal” disconnected the Luzhan distillery from the water drainage system. The reason was the discharge of industrial waste into the city sewers, due to which the treatment facilities stopped working normally. As explained by the city hall, the plant systematically poured concentrated production waste into the city sewer – bard, which is a by-product of the production of ethyl alcohol. Due to this, the treatment facilities of the water supply began to work with serious interruptions.
The city council notes that these discharges have become one of the main causes of the strong unpleasant smell that Chernivtsi have been complaining about in recent months. The stench was felt in different areas of the city and caused significant discomfort for residents.
The message reads: “Chernivtsivodokanal KP disconnected the Luzhansky Distillery from the water drainage networks. Due to the fact that the plant poured concentrated waste with a strong smell of bard into the sewers, the treatment facilities stopped working properly. This became the cause of the stench, which has significantly increased in the city in recent months.” The mayor’s office emphasized that the decision to disconnect was forced. According to the representatives of the city authorities, the violation of the technological mode of operation of the sewage treatment facilities made it impossible to fully clean the wastewater coming from the enterprise.
It is also noted that under such conditions, the further reception of effluents from the distillery could lead to even more serious environmental and sanitary problems for the city. Currently, “Chernivtsivodokanal” is working on stabilizing the situation and restoring the normal operation of treatment facilities. The company promises to take all the necessary measures so that the water drainage system works normally again.
The city council adds that further actions regarding the distillery will depend on whether the enterprise will eliminate the violation and whether it will be able to ensure safe handling of its waste without harming the city infrastructure and residents of Chernivtsi.
