During December 2025, the Russian Federation concentrated massive strikes on Odesa and its port infrastructure, trying to completely block Ukraine’s main grain export hub.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the aggressor seeks to cut off the country from the sea corridor through which about 90% of agricultural products pass. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that such actions are aimed at killing the economy and depriving the state of foreign exchange earnings, as the Russians are attacking the key logistics chains connecting Ukraine to the world market.
Air attacks of the Russian Federation have become more difficult to repulse, as drones increasingly bypass the areas where air defense equipment is located, laying routes over the sea. The constant hits have put the city under a state of virtual siege, where residents are forced to stay without electricity, water and heating for days due to the destruction of the power grid. The occupiers justify the strikes by allegedly using transport facilities in the interests of the Armed Forces, but experts emphasize that the real goal is to destabilize civilian life and export potential.
Serhiy Vovk, director of the Ukrainian Center for Transport Strategies, notes that Odesa is the “last gate” of export logistics, and its disruption will have long-term consequences even after the end of the war. Violation of supply stability forces foreign buyers to look for alternative markets, which threatens Ukraine with the loss of traditional trade partners. The systematic destruction of elevators, terminals, and access roads is part of Russia’s strategy to push Ukrainian products out of the world market and ultimately undermine the country’s economic stability in 2026.
On the night of December 31, the Russian military is on duty fired at energy infrastructure in the Odesa region, as a result of which two energy facilities of the DTEK company were seriously damaged.
The tense situation in Odessa is even more so complicated when it became known that part of the city was left without electricity, water and heat supply as a result of shelling.
