The government’s decision will allow the continuity of Ukrainian polar research and ensure the operation of the “Akademik Vernadsky” station and the research vessel “Noosphere”.
The station “Akademik Vernadskyi” remains a key point for climatic, atmospheric and geomagnetic observations, data from which are used for global weather forecasts.
Verbatim NATS: “Ukraine is one of the few countries in the world that has year-round stations in the Antarctic, as well as the right to vote in the Antarctic Treaty. This means that we make a daily contribution to global science and have a real influence on policy regarding the icy continent.
Even in the face of a full-scale war, it is important for us to continue the scientific mission in the Antarctic, because stopping it will erase all the investments that Ukraine has already made in Antarctic research over the past 30 years.”
Details: The government plans that after the end of the war, a new ten-year program of polar research will be prepared and approved, which will be significantly expanded compared to the current one.
