“The IAEA announced an agreed local ceasefire near the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which allowed the critical repair of a power line to begin to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident”, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org
“Critically important work on the repair of the power transmission line near the Zaporizhzhia NPP in Ukraine has begun after another local ceasefire agreed through the mediation of the IAEA, said the director general of the agency, Raphael Grossi. The IAEA team is overseeing the repairs, which are expected to last several days and are aimed at preventing a nuclear accident in the context of a military conflict,” the statement said.
Grossi thanked both parties for agreeing to a new temporary “window of silence”, which allowed the resumption of electricity transmission between the distribution substations of the Zaporizhzhya NPP and the Zaporizhzhia TPP.
Six reactors of the Zaporizhzhya NPP have been in cold shutdown since 2022. The IAEA is constantly present at the facility to monitor security during shelling.
Russian forces seized Europe’s largest nuclear power plant with six reactors in the first weeks of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The plant does not produce electricity, but each side regularly accuses the other of hostilities that threaten nuclear safety.
