In the city of Brovary, Kyiv region, the use of a gasoline generator in the basement of an apartment building led to fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.
According to the report of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, as a result of a gross violation of safety rules, one person died on the spot, and another was hospitalized in serious condition.
The rescuers who arrived at the call stated that the accumulation of combustion products in the closed space of the basement became fatal for the residents who tried to provide themselves with electricity during blackouts caused by the aggression of the Russian Federation. Carbon monoxide remains an extremely dangerous “silent killer” because it has no color or odor, making it impossible to detect without special sensors until the first symptoms of poisoning occur.
The State Emergency Service recalled the basic rules for using generators:
- use the generator only outdoors, no closer than 6 m from buildings;
- it is strictly forbidden to install generators in residential premises, basements, garages, on balconies;
- do not place the generator near windows, doors and ventilation openings;
- make sure that exhaust gases do not get inside the house;
- refuel the generator only after complete cooling;
- install a carbon monoxide detector.
Meanwhile, Ukrainians were explained how much generator light costs during blackouts.
