The national police of the Chernihiv region detained a 22-year-old local resident who is suspected of committing an act of vandalism against a Jewish religious symbol on the night of December 22.
According to law enforcement officers, immediately after the incident, the young man left the region, trying to avoid responsibility, but during the search, his whereabouts were established. Currently, the suspect is in custody, and investigators are investigating the motives of his act, which caused a significant response in the city community.
Based on this fact, criminal proceedings have been opened under Part 1 of Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which refers to deliberate actions aimed at inciting religious enmity and insulting the feelings of citizens. The sanction of the article provides for punishment ranging from a fine to restriction of freedom for a term of up to three years. The police emphasize the inadmissibility of manifestations of intolerance and note that such provocations in the conditions of the war waged by Russia play into the hands of enemy propaganda that is trying to split Ukrainian society.
Currently, investigative actions are ongoing to collect the evidence base and transfer the case to court. Police officers check the detainee for involvement in other crimes, and also establish whether the person acted independently or on someone else’s instructions. The condition of the religious monument has been taken under the control of local authorities, and law enforcement agencies have increased patrolling of cultural and religious heritage sites in the city.
