“Arturo Mercario sharply criticized the leader of the Scuderia”, — write: sport.ua
The Italian, famous for helping Niki Lauda out of a burning car after a crash at the Nürburgring in 1976, said:
“Leclerc ended up taking a place at Ferrari that he simply didn’t deserve at the time. He is a very good driver, as are many others. If you put several names in a hat and pull one out, they are all about the same. He is not special.”
This season, the Monegasque has overtaken seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, taking all seven Ferrari podiums, as well as the team’s only pole – at the Hungarian Grand Prix. However, for Mercario it does not matter:
“It makes no sense to boast that you are ahead of a seven-time world champion like Hamilton, when in fact Lewis has taken his foot off the gas because he does not feel integrated into the team. Why would he give 110% under such circumstances?”
In conclusion, Mercario made an even harsher statement:
“If Enzo Ferrari were alive, he wouldn’t even have passed through the gates of Maranello – I’m sure of that. He would not be accepted even as a client.”
