Ukraine already has a solid fleet of German IRIS-T air defense systems / photo WikipediaGermany handed over the ninth IRIS-T air defense missile complex to Ukraine. This is reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
It is noted that this modern air defense missile complex is manufactured by the German company Diehl Defense. It is said that the complex is designed to destroy aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles.
“High-tech IRIS-T missiles can quickly maneuver, hit targets both on opposite courses and during pursuit, and have highly sensitive infrared homing heads. They are capable of hitting modern aircraft, overcoming their defense complexes, distinguishing real targets from false ones,” the Ministry of Defense emphasizes.
At the same time, it is noted that two types of IRIS-T complexes are currently used:
- SLS – short range, range up to 12 km, height up to 8 km;
- SLM – medium radius of action, range up to 40 km, height up to 20 km.
According to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the IRIS-T complex can be integrated into the unified air defense system of Ukraine, where it works in cooperation with other means of air defense and anti-missile defense.
Production of IRIS-T systemsAs UNIAN reported, according to Defense Express, the German company Diehl Defense is investing about one billion euros in expanding the production of air defense systems and missiles for them.
Among them, IRIS-T SLM medium-range anti-aircraft missile systems, which were ordered both for Ukraine and for other European countries, stand out. The production of the IRIS-T SLM air defense system was increased due to the completion of the construction of a new integration and testing center. Denmark, Switzerland and Slovenia became the last customers of these air defense systems.
Diehl Defense plans to build and purchase new industrial facilities to increase the production of air defense systems and missiles for them. Some of them have already been completed and are in use.
