Details: The Trump administration has ordered about 30 U.S. ambassadors to return to the United States in the coming weeks, a trade union for career diplomats says is unprecedented for the United States.

Many ambassadors were informed the other day that they will leave their posts by mid-January. In all cases, we are talking about ambassadors appointed during the Biden presidency and confirmed by the Senate. The standard term of work of an ambassador in one country is 3-4 years.
According to Nikki Garmer, spokeswoman for the trade union of career diplomats, in many cases, ambassadors or heads of diplomatic missions were informed of their dismissal completely unexpectedly, by phone call, without any other additional explanations – which is also an extremely atypical approach.
Garmer claims that the union, after checking the archives, “can confidently say that such a mass recall has never happened since the establishment of the foreign service as we know it.” The exact number of ambassadors who have been notified of their resignations is not yet known.
When asked for comment, the State Department said it was “standard process for any administration” because the ambassador is “the president’s personal representative, and it is the president’s right to ensure that he has people in these countries to advance the America First agenda.”
Politico learned of the expected resignations last week. The dismissals will allegedly affect American ambassadors in all parts of the world, about a dozen cases – embassies in sub-Saharan African countries.
At the same time, and until now, a number of US embassies did not have an officially appointed ambassador. Among other things, this is also Ukraine, where there has been no US ambassador since the spring of 2025, when the previous ambassador, Bridget Brink, left this position by her own decision.
She later revealed that one of the reasons for this decision was hers disagreement with the policies of the new administration regarding Ukraine.
After Brink’s resignation decided to run for the House of Representatives in his home state of Michigan.
