The United States offered to hold talks involving Ukraine and Russia in Florida. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky, noting that such an idea is connected with the desire of the Donald Trump administration to advance a peace agreement, writes Bloomberg.
According to the head of state, such a proposal is related to the position of the new administration of US President Donald Trump, which insists on finding ways to a peaceful agreement. “The United States said that they will have a separate meeting with representatives of Russia and, as far as I understand, they proposed a Ukraine-USA-Russia format,” Zelenskyi said.
He clarified that the possibility of conducting tripartite negotiations will directly depend on the results of bilateral consultations between Ukraine and the USA, which started on December 19. “It is logical that before the joint meeting we will evaluate the results of the negotiations between Ukraine and the USA – whether they are positive or not. And we will move away from this,” the president said.
Zelenskyi also said that if such negotiations are held, the European side can join them. According to him, representatives of Europe are already in Florida.
At the same time, active diplomatic contacts continue. The Ukrainian delegation is headed by Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov. The consultations are taking place after a series of meetings between US special representative Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner — son-in-law of Donald Trump — with Ukrainian and European partners in Berlin.
Witkoff and Kushner are expected to meet with Kremlin representative Kirill Dmitriev in Florida in the coming days. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is temporarily acting as National Security Advisor, did not rule out his participation in some of these meetings.
At the same time, Zelensky emphasized: any peace agreement makes sense only when it actually stops the war, and does not exist formally. “Peace is better than war, but not at any price. We have already paid a very high price. A fair and durable peace is important for us, so that it cannot be destroyed by another desire of Putin or another Putin,” the president emphasized.
He added that today no peace agreement actually exists. “There is no agreement today. It exists only when the war is actually stopped, and not just written on paper in letters,” Zelenskyy said during a joint press conference with Portuguese Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro.
Separately, the president focused on the issue of security guarantees. According to him, Ukraine wants to clearly understand what partners will do in the event of a new attack by Russia after the end of the current war. “We are talking about the deterrence package, about the future Ukrainian army, about sanctions that will be automatically introduced. For us, these are fundamental things,” he emphasized.
Zelenskyi also commented on the topic of elections, which appears in one of the previous peace plans prepared with the participation of the United States and Russia. According to this document, Ukraine must hold presidential elections after a ceasefire or the end of the war. “Our American partners raised this issue. If they raise it, it means they know how to help ensure safe elections,” the president said.
Earlier, Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that he will be able to end the war “very quickly”, but his attempts to push for an end to hostilities are running into a tough position from the Kremlin. According to Zelensky, Russia is not ready to give up its maximalist demands, including the issue of Ukrainian territories, which Kyiv categorically rejects. “What is important for us is not the division of territories and resources, but a stable, long-term peace with reliable security guarantees,” concluded the President of Ukraine.
