The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the Russian Federation’s observance of human rights in the occupied territories of Ukraine

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on human rights violations in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga welcomed this decision.

Details: The resolution is entitled “Situation with human rights in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.”

The document covers the human rights situation in all the territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by Russia and provides enhanced monitoring of systemic violations committed by the Russian occupation administration against the local population.

In addition, the document clearly condemns the aggressive war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, it also confirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within the internationally recognized borders and emphasizes the non-recognition of any attempts to change the status of Ukrainian territories.

Serious concern is also expressed about the militarization of the occupied territories, the forced mobilization of their residents into the armed forces of the Russian Federation, the persecution of journalists, human rights defenders and representatives of civil society, as well as the destruction of cultural heritage, in particular in Crimea.

Literally: “This year’s document is strengthened by new provisions that directly condemn torture, inhumane treatment and other gross violations of human rights suffered by Ukrainian prisoners of war and illegally detained civilians. The resolution is based on the conclusions of the Independent International Commission for the Investigation of Crimes of the Russian Federation, which confirm the facts of enforced disappearances and torture both in the occupied territories and in Russia itself.”

Details: The Russian Federation’s refusal to provide information on the fate of kidnapped and captured Ukrainians is also condemned.

The UN General Assembly called on Russia to ensure unimpeded access of the ICRC to places of detention of prisoners, to guarantee proper medical care, to carry out a full exchange of prisoners of war, to release all illegally detained persons, including Crimean Tatars, civilians, political prisoners and journalists.

Also, the UN demands that Russia immediately stop the aggression and withdraw all troops from the territory of Ukraine.

In turn, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga welcomed the adoption of such a decision.

Sybig’s direct speech in the X social network: “Ukraine has initiated the adoption of this resolution every year since 2016. The document strongly condemns Russia’s aggression, confirms Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and demands an immediate end to the war and the withdrawal of Russian troops. The resolution strengthens international monitoring of serious violations of human rights and humanitarian law and emphasizes the need for accountability.”

Details: 79 countries voted for this document, against – 16, and 73 abstained. In particular, opponents of this resolution were: Russia, Belarus, South Korea, China, Iran, Burkina Faso, Eritrea, Sudan, Mali, Zimbabwe, Burundi, CAR, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Cuba, Nicaragua.
