The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, noted that the introduction of sanctions against Russia and the joint actions of international partners can significantly reduce the Kremlin’s ability to wage war next year.
He emphasized that the economy of the Russian Federation is no longer able to support hostilities at the previous level, if the sanctions are effective.
“I don’t think that (Russian dictator Vladimir – ed.) Putin’s economy is capable of continuing this war on the scale that existed before. If the sanctions really apply, and the United States, if they are honest and open, if Putin now diplomatically slows down this wave, then the United States will put more pressure on them,” Zelensky said.
At the same time, according to him, the signals given by Putin are not new at all. He does not want to end the war. The question is whether he can continue it. This issue already depends on the partners, on their sanctions and diplomatic pressure.
Zelensky also pointed out that Putin’s position has not changed — he does not seek to end the war, but further actions depend on international pressure.
“Now American colleagues claim that Putin is ready for the end of the war. Both publicly and in a non-public format. We support the initiatives of the Americans,” the Ukrainian president added.
He also emphasized that Ukraine does not agree with all features of certain future agreements, in particular, there are some disagreements regarding the territorial issue, financing of frozen assets, etc.
Zelenskyi also pointed to differences on territorial issues within the framework of possible peace agreements, supporting US initiatives.
