Persons who have fled from Ukrainian justice abroad are trying to use martial law as a basis for defense in the courts of other countries. These include entrepreneurs Timur Mindich and Oleksandr Zukerman, involved in the “Midas” case.
Oleksandr Abakumov, the head of the detective unit, told about this interview RBC-Ukraine.
As noted, when answering the question whether Mindich and Zukerman’s extradition or a trial in Israel is possible, Abakumov noted that all available legal mechanisms are currently being worked out, including the issue of extradition.
“There is a certain general negative trend: persons who are hiding from Ukrainian justice try to use the war as an argument in their favor in the courts there – they say, it is dangerous here, and it is safer there,” he explained.
At the same time, according to the head of the detective division, Ukraine already has a positive experience of cooperation with other states in matters of extradition of persons suspected of corruption crimes.
Abakumov emphasized that NABU is currently working in this direction and will use every legal instrument – be it extradition or other forms of international legal cooperation.
“The key for us is that these people do not escape responsibility, wherever they are physically. But the main difficulty may be the fact that these two people are Israeli citizens who are hiding in Israel,” he said.
We will remind, NABU told how it exposed a corruption scheme in the energy sector.
NABU also explained why they do not publish new tapes about Mindich.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine understood that Timur Mindych, the person involved in the high-profile case, could leave the country, but hasty actions could jeopardize the entire operation.
