Volodymyr Butko was born on June 28, 1948 in the village of Ryzyne, Zvenigorod district, Chrkashchyna, and after moving to Ternopil, he devoted almost all of his conscious life to biathlon – first he competed himself, and then he trained young athletes. In particular, he trained the three-time champion of the 1998 Paralympic Games Petro Kardash, for which he received the title of Honored Coach of Ukraine.

Two well-known biathlon coaches are no longer with us (Karlenko died in 2023) From the middle of the first decade of the 2000s, Butko worked for a long time at the headquarters of the national teams of Ukraine, in particular, he was an assistant to Kostyantyn Vaygin when he led the men’s national team of Ukraine, he was a mentor of the Ukrainian national team at the IBU Cup, and he worked in the team’s service at the World Cup. Volodymyr Petrovych contributed to the development and progress of dozens of famous Ukrainian biathletes.
