Ukrainian welterweight fighter Yaroslav Amosov, after his debut fight, spoke emotionally about the war in Ukraine, noting that it is inappropriate to compare fights in the Octagon with real combat actions.
He remarked that phrases like “the next fight will be a war” are unacceptable, because real war is life and death, not just a contest in the ring.
During a conversation with journalists, Amosov harshly reacted to popular phrases in combat sports about “war in the octagon”.
“Sometimes fighters say: ‘The next fight will be war’ – guys, if you don’t know what war is, then shut your mouths. War is not an octagon or a fight. It’s completely different,” the Ukrainian stressed.
Amosov also noted that during difficult moments in battle, he remembers his own war experience, as this is what helps him stay strong. He believes that going to the Octagon is an opportunity to support Ukrainians in difficult times, giving positive emotions to the military.
According to Amosov, real war has nothing to do with hard training or grueling weight lifting.
“You can die at any second. And your friend can die. My country has been living in this for four years,” the fighter added.
Amosov admitted that in the most difficult moments during battles, he often recalls his war experience – and this is what helps him overcome difficulties in sports.
“When I have a hard time, I think about how hard it was for me in the war. After that, any battle is perceived differently,” he explained.
The fighter emphasized that entering the octagon for him is not only a sport, but also an opportunity to give positive emotions to Ukrainians in an extremely difficult time.
“If I give a little good mood to the military, I’m happy. If I give something positive for my country, that’s the most important thing for me,” said Amosov.
Yaroslav confirmed that he plans to return to Ukraine in the near future.
“I have tickets home. I’m flying through Poland, because I can’t go directly. I was in America for a year and I miss my country, my family, my children very much. Seeing my daughter and son is my dream right now,” the fighter shared.
The beginning of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine found Amosov in his native Irpen.
He was preparing for his next MMA fight, which was scheduled for May 13, 2022. At the legendary “Wembley” stadium in London, the Ukrainian was supposed to defend the championship title against the British Michael Page. However, this match never took place.
The athlete forgot about his professional career – he immediately enrolled in the territorial defense and took part in military operations, protecting his native city and Kyiv from invaders.
