Belarus handed over 114 civilians to Ukraine as part of a large-scale humanitarian measure. The operation was coordinated directly on the spot by the head of the GUR Kyrylo Budanov, the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported.
Today, an important humanitarian operation for the return of civilians took place between Ukraine and Belarus. As a result of previous agreements and negotiations with the Belarusian side, 114 civilians were handed over to Ukraine, including Ukrainians who were in places of detention on the territory of the Republic of Belarus.
On the Ukrainian side, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov directed the operation directly on the spot. Among the returnees are Ukrainian civilians who were detained in Belarus and accused of allegedly collaborating with Ukrainian special services. The youngest of the freed Ukrainians is 25 years old. His wife was returned during the previous stage of the exchange on November 22.
In addition to Ukrainians, citizens of Belarus, imprisoned for political reasons and sentenced to long terms, were handed over as part of the same operation. Among them are well-known Belarusian public and political figures, including Maria Aleksandrova, Viktor Babariko, journalist Maryna Zolotova and others. After passing a medical examination and at their own request, freed Belarusian citizens will be sent to Poland and Lithuania.
The GUR separately thanked the American side, personally US President Donald Trump, US President’s Special Envoy to Belarus John Cole and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Christopher Smith. “Without their personal participation, today’s successful release of civilians would have been impossible,” Ukrainian intelligence emphasized.
The GUR also noted that cooperation with the Belarusian side in humanitarian issues continues. All freed Ukrainian and foreign citizens will receive the necessary medical and psychological assistance.
Also, Lukashenko pardoned 123 prisoners: among them Kolesnikov and five Ukrainians.
