Journalists have identified the names of 155,368 Russian soldiers who have died since the beginning of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Russian Service of the BBC and “Mediazon” together with a team of volunteers are conducting the calculation of losses.

According to the given data, a third of all the dead are volunteers who signed a contract with the Russian army after the start of the war.

As the researchers note, a year ago this category accounted for only 15% of deaths. Journalists attribute the increase in losses in this category to the fact that volunteers are now being thrown into the most difficult areas – primarily in the Donetsk region.

13% of all dead are convicts who went to the front from colonies and pre-trial detention centers, 11% are mobilized.

Bashkortostan and Tatarstan are in the lead in terms of the absolute number of confirmed dead.

Researchers keep lists of the dead, focusing on reports from open sources: mass media, statements of local administrations, publications of relatives on social networks and data from cemeteries.

According to journalists’ estimates, the real number of dead on the Russian side is much higher and may range from 239,000 to 345,260 people.

Moscow and Kyiv do not disclose losses in the war in Ukraine, talking only about the losses of the enemy.
